The prevalence of dyslipidemia in the European Union is >50% (World Health Organization, 2021) creating numerous health concerns because it is involved in atherosclerosis, the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide for CVD (Minhas et al., 2021). Interestingly, a staggering amount of evidence derived from clinical studies suggests that this process displays some sex and gender differences (Man et al., 2020; Franconi et al., 2017; Spence and Pilote, 2015; Mathur et al., 2015). As already stated, tobacco smoke and the use of COC involve millions of men and women all over the world (United Nations, 2019; World Health Organisation, 2018).

      Citation Excerpt :

To characterise the existing literature, which has rarely explored sex-gender intersection, the following sections will first explore literature linking sex to CVD and AL, followed thereafter with links to gender. Research demonstrates clinical and epidemiologic differences between women and men in CVD,34 but rather little is known about specific biological factors that drive those differences. It is important to understand sex differences for practical reasons.
