Protective actions of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) and downstream pathways against environmental stressors
2022, Free Radical Biology and MedicineCitation Excerpt :High serum levels of bilirubin have also been inversely correlated with the incidence of coronary artery disease [133], presumably due to increased antioxidant effects. Bilirubin prevents vascular NADPH oxidase activation [134], an enzyme that is known to be involved in the development of cardiovascular diseases [135–138]. Likewise, reduced levels of HO-1 are also found in patients with peripheral artery disease, a common manifestation of atherosclerosis [139].
Heme oxygenase-nitric oxide crosstalk-mediated iron homeostasis in plants under oxidative stress

2022, AquacultureCitation Excerpt :Biliverdin is converted to bilirubin (BR) by biliverdin reductase (BVR), which is a potent endogenous antioxidant with recently recognized anti-inflammatory properties (Otterbein, 2006). In vitro work indicates that bilirubin protects against NADPH-mediated superoxide production (Kwak et al., 1991) and bilirubin treatment can reduce oxidative stress induced by various stimuli (Jansen et al., 2010). CO has numerous biological functions because it has vasodilatory, anti-proliferative, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory properties (Ryter et al., 2006).
