2021, Journal of BiomechanicsCitation Excerpt :The mechanical properties of the aortic wall have a direct implication on the cardiovascular risk. Arterial hypertension (Heintz et al., 1993), diabetes (Salomaa et al., 1995) and atherosclerosis (Dart et al., 1991) are associated with marked changes in the structure and mechanical properties of large arteries. For example, Vaccarino et al. (2000) found a 10 mmHg increase in pulse pressure, as a measure of arterial stiffness, was correlated with a 12% increased risk of coronary heart disease, a 14% increased risk of congestive heart failure and a 6% increase in overall mortality.
